Question How do you avoid launching with no ads?

As I work on the b-plan for a local free classified site I'm perplexed by one thing, how do I launch with an empty site? I've seen a lot of helpful marketing ideas in this forum to build traffic and grow ad postings once the site is up and running but I worry people arriving at a site that is empty might be turned off and leave thinking the site is abandoned or not worth their time. Is this just a hurdle every new classified site has to go overcome?

If anyone has any advice on a content launch strategy or ideas for pre-populating the site with some ads for launch I'd appreciate it.
Thanks! Greg

Priming a site is always difficult and specific markets are different. What is the subject of your site?

can you be quite specific - general classifieds in what area. Have a you a small marketing plan? do you have competition? etc.

If you have competition and you are offering free adverts ,then write to those advertisers for example. Get a few people you know to put some adverts on. Everybody has something to sell. Even you do. Do you have a craigslist in your area, contact a few of the sellers, etc Think about what is going to make you different. Think about how you will reach both your buyers and sellers.

If you have just a general site, maybe you can approach some local churches and ask them if they will allow you to advertise or better yet promote your site via their newsletter or something. In exchange for everyone who registers on your site and places and ad from their church you will donate $1 to the church. If they have a large congregation it could get spendy for you but you would be able to write it all off

When i started mine i had a heap of dealers lined up to go on the site, but i went live to fast and the site was crappy and the never put their stuff on it. Just make sure it is 100% done before you even tell anyone about it.
