Figured I would start a new topic here.

Always curious to see how my SEO efforts are paying off, I routinely check a dozen or so keywords/phrases that I think are important to my site. Here's just a couple of my highlites:

Keyword: Used Toyotas
Yahoo: #5
Google: no good
MSN: #1 & #2

Keyword: Buy Used Toyota
Yahoo: #6
Google: no good
MSN: #1 & #2

That's just a sample, just looked them up, clearly I have some work to do with Google.

Anyone else want to share ?

For other keywords, I think that I have to wait for some other month

Just some month ago, Google has deleted many pages to many websites from its database.

Nobody understood why, but it was so...

June 27, 2006 Google has penalized all these websites and in the first positions of the serp's, it has inserted a lot of SPAM websites.

All this is incomprensibile, but it's so...

Maybe it's a bug!

I give you my own experience about the keywords, in order to avoid the same mistakes I've made...

I initially chose some keywords i thought 'interesting', and submitted my site with these keywords. I was totally wrong, and the traffic was close to zero (even if my ranking was excellent for the chosen keywords, because nobody use them in a search !).

Then, I found an excellent (free) tool, proposed by Yahoo!

(Yahoo! is far from the leader Google, but this tool is for us an indication. I think that the results would be the same with Google, just multiply the visits to 20 !)

For example (I will be nasty with fedeo, squadra azzuro has stolen our world cup ) : in may, noone with Yahoo.it asked for 'italy classifieds'. May be Fedeo is the first for this keyword, but a few users uses them...

I had the same experience. so before to submit your site to the search engines, please take one hour or two to list the most important keywords.
I've lost more than 6 month before changing to the correct keywords. But when you change them, the search engines don't understand that, and can penalize your site. 'Time is money' don't forget that !!!

Federico, for example (prove that i'm not rancorous !), if your service intends to italian people living in Italy, you'd better choose for example ' annuncio (chosen 27630 times in may) or annuncio immobiliare (13228)

another important thing about Google :
Google doesn't care about the meta 'keywords' and 'description'. The 'good' keywords must be placed in :
- the URL (example : www.italyclassifieds.net/annoncio_immobiliare). The SEO module is really useful for that.
- the title of the website
- the content of the website

Important Googlebot is almost 'blind'. : to see how you site will be seen, please use this free tool : http://www.scapture.com/ (use for 'navigateur' : linx and wait one or two minutes).

At last, don't forget the backlinks. When many sites (with a good Google PageRank) place a link to your site in their page, it seems for Google that your site is 'really interesting'. It will high your own PageRank, and you will be ranked BEFORE other sites using the same keywords...

edit don't waste time and money for soem directories that noone visit -test their Google PageRank before !!!!)

There's no miracle ! Don't change every week your keywords. Take the necessary time, then submit your site (don't forget DMOZ.ORG)... and wait without changing anything...

And the seeds will become beautiful flowers. and you'll become a happy (and rich !) webmaster...

I know what you said... but Italy Classifieds is the name of the site and it's normal that some webmaster offers a link with this name in the anchor, so my site is first!

I receive 2 or 3 visits/day (I know, it's nothing...) with this key... I did not have any effort to promote this key

I receive other visits from:

- classifieds italy
- classified ads in italy
- taormina italy real estate
- campania, italy real estate
- hotel name + city

etc, etc, etc...

I'm promoting an italian version (with italian keywords): http://www.annunciturismo.it/

So, I have a site for English speaking people and a site for Italians

I know the importance of DMOZ, but it's very hard to be listed there

What do you know about penalizations of June, 27?
