Remove the stuff you put in the template and just replace it with this:

{assign var="maffo" value=$smarty.const.FILESYSTEM_PATH}
{include file="$maffo/modules/maffo_news/templates/latest.tpl.php"}

Then when they click on the abreviated news item it will take the to the full article in the page that you linked to in your navigation.

I think this should do it, if not I'll let Maffo give more details.
