Not only that the support forum almost is dead since 2003, a few weeks ago some security exploits have been detected but the support seems to have no real interest in fixing these problems. That's why I decided to switch to a new software, hoping it will last for a long time...

For almost a week now I do evaluate many ad software. 68C seems to be the one which suits my needs at a reasonable price. But before I change to a new software, I have a few questions:
I dont have the knowledge to answer all of your question but will address the ones I can answer.

When an update is released there are generally 2 versions. A full install including all files and an upgrade which includes all the files minus the ioncube loaders.

The files that need to be replaced all depends on what was added/fixed in the update. Sometimes template files do change, but their changes are usually minor and often times the ones that do change have little to do with the look of the site. Most of your visual changes are handled via the layout.tpl.php template file and the style sheet.

When it comes time to do an upgrade the upgrade will have a list of the files that have changed and at a bare minimum what you need to do is just copy those files and the /install directory. Run the install script to make sure the database is updated and delete the install folder and its contents and the upgrade is done. If a template file changes(or underlying script file for that matter) then you would have to go through and manually move your changes over to the new file.

They do allow people to upgrade but im sorry I do not have the specifics on pricing.

Basically I never change any core files to make sure I can update the software at any time without having a lot of work. But I know many software where some changes can't be done in the templates. Is there a list where I can see what can be changed in the templates and what can be changed in the core files only (layout, color, form fields etc.)?
The best bet to see what you have control over as far as fields and such goes would be to check the online demo and play around in admin. You have complete control over the template files so you can change the order of the fields or even remove fields that you dont want. Some fields are built in and others are defined within admin.
