John, first of all, thanks! This has saved us lots of time dealing with customers over expired coupons - the emails about them have virtually stopped.
We added an extra field last night though, and I just noticed that it is not being set after a coupon error displays. And after looking at the step3.tpl.php code I'm not sure how possible this is. Any ideas?
