I created a new listing in the test Classifieds and then activated it, but why would the page stretch on for the entire 500 Characters of the long description...

I am interested in this product and i am sure that is something pretty easy to sort out.

That looks fine to me. That template's wrapper width is set to be relative to your browser's size, so naturally the tables inside will adjust themselves accordingly to fill the space they're set to fill. You could always edit the css though if it bothers you.
