I purchased phpmydirectory around 4 years ago and it was an absolute nightmare to edit or make any significant changes 'to the core files'. It is simply not designed to edit backend files quickly and intuitively. Unless the whole philosophy behind the script has turned around 180 degrees, then it is likely to be the same today. At a guess, would think that phpmydirectory was designed and built for those who just wish to make use of the inbuilt limited options to modify the presentation of the default script.

68C on the other hand is at the other end of the scale. Once you get used to how the files work together (which is pretty intuitive), editing code and templates is significantly easier. In addition, there are many, many inbuilt options to modify both the presentation and functionality of the script.

If your 'server' can handle this load, then I would be confident the '68C script' would handle it well. This has been asked before. For heavy loads, your 'server's' capability is probably more the issue to check out.
