Default Feature Removal

Hi,

I have just been looking at this script and it has many interesting options that I think may be useful in my situation.

But, as most situations are unique, mine is different than most looking to use a "classified"
script.

In my situation the outside user is completely removed from the equation. I have no need for the ability to allow anyone but me to "login" or post adds. There is no need for ratings, city/state categorization or any feature that has to do with anything other than one location, and one user (me) posting ads. This also includes "ad expiration".

I just need to have a good searchable structure, and a good ad detail page. Being able to forward the ad via email, contact me via web form (with anti spam measures), save the ad possibly as a pdf, and add multiple photos are all pluses.

So the situation is that rather than needing more features, or different features, I actually need less. Again, I have no need for anyone but me to post ads.

I have some experience with php scripts (mainly phpBB) editing templates, installing and doing mods if I have step by step instructions. But I'm leery of removing features and functionality as often related code is contained in more than one file. I could remove say, the ability to "register" or "login" from a template but that would leave other related code in the script. I may be wrong but my impression is that the right way to do this would be to remove the feature totally from the script instead of just access to it.

This script looks good, has features I will find useful but, it also has features that in my situation would be superfluous.

I have seen some script developers who've said "It is what it is" and leave it at that, they won't talk about doing any modifications. But it's my opinion that NO ONE is better qualified to modify any script in any way than the one who developed it.

Oh, and I would be interested to know if "core file" modification would be needed to remove features. I would prefer to not have to pay for an advanced edition of the script if I actually need to remove functionality.

Thanks,

Ken

Most of the features within 68 can be removed from within the admin such as search town/city/ etc etc.

I guess then that most of the work you will need to do is in the template files, removing links to pages such as 'place an ad'

Quite simple really.

I dont think you will need to mess with the core files.

So simply removing access to a feature and leaving code in other places won't cause problems or complications in the future?

Well I cant guarentee that but if you dont want anybody placing ads simply remove the link to it. As a double measure you can can place redirects in any pages you dont want the user to see.

..... and you can remove the login/register links as well - just remember (or bookmark) where the login page is first because you will still need to login. Sometimes, you will find it easier to add/edit a listing at the front end rather than via admin.
