Changing look of categories on home page

Hi,Just purchased 68 classifieds and have been playing around with it.
VERY inexperienced so forgive any daft ideas!
Please could someone please let me know how to get rid of the 3 full stops under each category image, also how can I prevent the sub-categories being displayed on the home page?
I've looked through the forums but couldn't find any suggestions.

Any help would be appreciated.

Do you mean the periods after the subcats when you say three full stops? If you open up the template /templates/default/home.tpl.php and simply remove the following at approx line 15...

[[subcats]]

it will remove subcats and the dots.

Make sure to back up the file before you edit it.
