When searching, I know that the "Search Text" field does not search the city, state and country fields.

That said ... what happens when the city field has hundreds of cities listed in the dropdown field? Is there a limit to this, or will it start slowing things down as the number of cities increases?

Has anyone changed this to display just a text field in place of the drop-down list, so that folks could put in whatever city they wanted to search for?

If I recall correctly the city field list is built from the registered users. The reason being is Why let users search in a city that there are no ads for?

I see your point Larry. Thanks.

    Ok, point taken.
But there's still the following error. What if people spell the city wrong or make a typo? Then the search drop down will have duplicates in?
Can't we set up a list in the database or maintenance part somewhere?

    Thanks

Its probably quicker to simply edit their account through the 68C admin control panel and correct errors like this. Another way to do it is if you have a known group of cities (lets say) is to use an extrafield and then disable the normal 'city' from showing.

Where would this list come from? This software is used internationally. Do you have a list of every city in the world? If you did, how long would that list be? Would that be convenient for the end users?

The bottom line is that no system is going to be perfect by any means. A world wide list of cities is unfeasible. Big Classifieds sites like Craig's List and Kijiji limit to the largest metropolitan areas in the US which literally leave out thousands of other cities. I live in a smaller town and the use of those sites is totally useless to me. On the flip side, how many people misspell the city they actually live in? I'm sure it happens, but I wouldn't think too often.

The only suggestion that I would have is if your site is in a particularly local area, you could manually make your own drop down list and use that in both the registration as well as the search templates.
