I'm in the process of setting up categories and i have a question about keywords, are these the words the search engines look for and if so what is a recommended amount? or is there a set set amount of words needed?

There is no recommended amount for keywords.
The big search engines like Google don’t care any more for keywords, however small engines still using them and it doesn’t hurt to put them. The search engines care for a good content. If I will do for example Mazda category on my site, I will put keywords like Mazda, truck, SUV, car, auto, Calgary (as my site for Calgary) and so on... Not too many. The same keywords must be in content of your page otherwise they useless.
I would suggest concentrating on other marketing strategies other than keywords.
