Default Import Feeds from other 68 sites - 11-19-2006, 10:05 PM

I've got a basic system to import feeds from other 68 sites. It is still very basic and doesn't cover extra fields but I just wanted to see if there is any interest for this as a module.

So far it has an admin area where you create incoming feeds:

name - url - authorization number - owner (drop down) - automatic/manual authorization for listings - allowed extras (bold/feature/highlight) - listings limit - image per listing limit - frequency to import (in days)

It works almost identical to the experience of oodle. The incoming feed will contain a list of all listings and those not present in each new import will be deleted. It updates existing listings and inserts new ones. It takes the images from the main site and resizes them for the thumbnails and regular images. Once the listings are there they will expire at the originating sites expire or be deleted if they disappear from the feed. When items are deleted their images and other data goes just like when a regular listing expires.

At this point it is completely modular, no need to edit templates, just initialize activate and admin the feeds.

Anything y'all want that isn't here or would prefer to operate differently let me know. It is still a while out for production since I have a few other priorities but would like to get some feed back on how others think it should work.

Regards,

John

Hi John,

I think any additional exposure of our sites and listings will be good.
Are this feed compatible with 68 real estate sites like mine too?

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

Yes, at this point it only takes the basic fields title price url etc. I'm not yet sure how I plan to handle extra fields since this would cause a need to edit the edit the module for different fields from different feeds and etc.

I just posted a similar question about accepting car dealers' feeds at
http://www.68classifieds.com/forums/...ead.php?t=2525

Can your importing function work for individual feeds too?

Yes, I had forgotten about this post, let me update the status of this module.

In the course of making this module I was racking my head trying to make some generic solution, but due to the dynamic nature of the classifieds and the feeds I came to the conclusion that it just isn't possible.

Any module would have to be custom tailored to the 68C site (categories, extra fields, etc) and would have to be able to handle a specific format. So I have no future plans on producing a generic module of this nature. Once I can get time in my schedule, I do plan on taking on more custom work, but I just can't spare the time lately.
