Turning off session ID's

Can anybody tell me how you turn off session ID's please?

if your host allows it you can add the following line to your .htaccess file to turn off trans session id's.

php_flag session.use_trans_sid off

I did this and Google is still indexing the session id in the URL...any one know why this is happenning?
