What version of 68 Classifieds are you running?
Example: V4.1.6 Designer

What template are you using?
custom - based from default

Please describe in detail the issue you are having:
I want to have a stand-alone signup box. I don't want to create a dummy user with the newsletter option since that user may actually want to register later and that email is taken.

How do I get the stand-alone newsletter box, merged with the newsletter checkbox in the registration form?

With the current module that is not possible. You could always use a third party email service and most of them supply you with a sign up form. I have an integration into Campaign monitor here:
