Default 68C for high traffic site

What version of 68 Classifieds are you running?
Example: V4.1.6 Developer

What template are you using? Default

Please describe in detail the issue you are having:
My site is getting more than 40,000 page views daily. Lately, the sql service has been overloaded causing site downtime. I have a vps with 1.2GB RAM. My host tells me that upon running a tune-up script on sql, the following recommendations were suggested. Any comments on this? Is 68C optimized for very high traffic websites? What I can I do improve? Thanks

-------- Recommendations -----------------------------------------------------
General recommendations:
Run OPTIMIZE TABLE to defragment tables for better performance
MySQL started within last 24 hours - recommendations may be inaccurate
Enable the slow query log to troubleshoot bad queries
Adjust your join queries to always utilize indexes
When making adjustments, make tmp_table_size/max_heap_table_size equal
Reduce your SELECT DISTINCT queries without LIMIT clauses
Optimize queries and/or use InnoDB to reduce lock wait
Variables to adjust:
*** MySQL's maximum memory usage is dangerously high ***
*** Add RAM before increasing MySQL buffer variables ***
join_buffer_size (> 128.0K, or always use indexes with joins)
tmp_table_size (> 32M)
max_heap_table_size (> 16M)
------------

Aside from the mysql optimization, I would also look into caching, you can query cache, memcache, turn on caching via smarty, and etc. Less calls to the database will give you a noticeable improvement.

68C may not be ideally optimized for for a high traffic site but it appears to be adequate. Usually the problem when performance is concerned is people run it on a substandard system.

1.2GB of ram is pathetically small for a desktop system let alone a database server. If your serious about driving traffic your going to have to pay to play and that means getting some dedicated hardware where you can control how the data is stored on the disks, kernel tuning etc.

Shared hosting plans are worthless for anything but simple low traffic web sites and VPS's are only marginally better. Intel systems in generally are not ideally suited to virtualized environments regardless of hat intel and VMware folks tell you. They cant dream of competing with true virtualized environments like the IBM POWER or Z systems.

John: How would I go about caching.
