Modifying a Package after used

Hello,
Any assistance with this question would be greatly appreciated.

I am new and just setting up my packages. My main ongoing package is a 30 day ad for $4.99.
To get started,for a short time I want to provide 60 days rather than the standard 30.

Is the best route to create the 30 day package but in admin set it up to actually provide the 60 days in the promotion. The reason I am asking, is to be clear in my thinking that the customers who place ads under this package will be offered this package at renewal. so, I could then simply modify the package setting back to 30 days when I am no longer offering the extended time.
Is this correct thinking? If I take this route, when I change the package back to 30 I am assuming it only effects the customer ads going forward under the package?

I have also thought to just make this package inactive and create a new one for 30 but, I am concerned the renewal might get messed up. I see that on renewal they are only offered the package they went in under, not all available.

I think the way you outlined it would be best. Create the package and then later change it that way those listings are always associated with that package. If you go and delete it then they will have issues renewing the listings later.
