Default MSI Wind / Advent 4211

Just wondered what anyone thinks of one of these little machines.

They cost £280 in the UK, have a 1.6ghz processer, thats still pretty rapid. 677mhz upto 2gb ram, 1024 * 600 res.

Comes with XP.

Can you program from one of these? It would need apache running, a browser and an IDE. Its no good for images, but thats design, im talking programming.

Obviously you wouldnt have one of these as your main pc, I have a large 17" Laptop but I cant just run around with it. With one of these things I can I can shut down my laptop, flyoff somewhere, work a couple of days then come home. Perfect. I have email, and the internet on the move.

Whats anybody think?

How resourceful is Apache? Larry whats your opinion?

You shouldn't have any issues running Apache. It's not too big on resources, especially assuming that you are running it for a localhost. It's processing requirement is of course directly related to how big a load (how much it is serving), so in a localhost development environment it should be just fine on that machine.

For a development server you dont need much at all. I ran apache on an old 333mhz pentium for a long time. Even now my web server is a dual 1ghz system, but of course I run linux.

Computers are like air conditioners, they work great until you open windows.

For your stated purposes, I think it'll be just fine.

Well before I made this post I went to PC world (for those who dont have a PC world, its an entire world of PC's where you are served by androids), they had the said PC in stock.

After a bit of research on the net, I decided to buy the thing. I went to PC world but they are sold out. Great! My fault for dithering.

I did go and make a nice little purchase though, a Yamaha Jog RR Lorenzo to fly me around the town.

Maffo, just about any laptop would be good enough. I'd consider battery life, weight and size more than just about any other features. You need mobility primarily and the basic specs for most new computers are more than you need to run apache/php.

Yes, Im defo going to get one.

There is a problem with the batteries. They are only 2 cell where as they are supposed to be shipped with a 6 cell. 1 cell = 1 hour of battery life so the difference is massive.

There is another make called the asus 1000h which has the same spec, has a 6 cell battery but is more expensive, a little bit heaver and I believe from what I have read is of a slightly inferior build quality to the the msi wind.

I think the 6 cell battery makes my mind up for me.

Its a great thing for putting the rucksack on your shoulders and dissappearing for a few days with the ability to program, email and whatever else I need to do.

If you know a student you can get a macbook fairly cheap. Find a student and have them get the adc membership and use it.

(£594.89 ex VAT) without discount, I think it is something like 15-20% off.
